ASSOCIAÇÃO VIDA JOVEM (VJ)

SAO PAULO

Vida Jovem was founded in 1987 in the neighborhood of Ipiranga, São Paulo, on the edge of the city’s largest shanty town, known as Heliopolis. At the time, the program was inspired by the United States’ successful Boys Hope Girls Hope program and sought to offer a stable, family-like home environment for children who the child welfare agencies determined could no longer live with their own families. VJ began providing its residents tutoring in English, Portuguese, Math as well as classes in computers, dance, music, sports, art and theatre. Though, in 2009, the adoption law changed and the VJ Board then decided to work towards preparing the teens in its homes and from the surrounding impoverished communities for the job market.Vida Jovem offers professional skills in Computer Maintenance, Web Design, Administration and Electrician training, professional skill building, core class tutoring (English, Math and Portuguese), peer group discussions, job interviewing techniques and corporate behavior classes. At the end of the program, VJ youth are supported in obtaining paid apprenticeships and a mentor to provide on-going coaching.
